Meaning and levels of Cholesterol


Cholesterol means a thin layer of fat which is often produced at the liver area. The name usually comes from the greek word chole means bile and sterol means solid. Whenever cholesterol is found it remains solid in form. Cholesterol is to build and maintain the membranes. The main sources of getting cholesterol is through animal fats, human breast milk. Mainly it is measured as
200 mg which is a lower risk, 200 mg – 240 mg borderline for high risk, 240 mg above very high risk. This was as per the 1987 report of national cholesterol education program. Today`s time they check cholesterol in the following way
LDL (lower density lipoprotein)  cholesterol
Less than 100 is the optimal goal achieved
100 – 139 is close to the optimum goal
139 – 159 is close to borderline
160 – 189 the level is very high
190 and above is the highest risk and there is a definite risk and doctors description is required.
Cholesterol problems are very much common these days.
